 Mary Barry's Pots
« Thread Started on Jul 2, 2009, 12:04pm »

Something Ronda said about buying a Potter's Wheel made me recall my Grandmother and her hobby.. Pottery. Mary Barry threw pots on a motor driven potter's wheel in her home studio (a converted garage). She learned to throw pots at Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, Tx. near Dallas. My Uncle Loydd eventually built a big gas Kiln in her backyard and she was very prolific. I think she started around 1967 and the latest pot I have is dated 1993.

She was a great influence on me, introduced me to the arts and encouraged me to be creative. Something she used to say to me over and over... "always keep an open mind and broaden your horizons".... it has served me well. She passed away in 1998 if I remember correctly.

Here's some of her work that I have in my home... some is packed away.

Here's one of the goofy little sculptures I used to make using Leggs eggs (pantyhose.. remember those?) to shape the body... lol...

Grandmother did the glaze ....

Well... I sure do miss her but it's nice to have her art to remember her by...

Thanks for lookin!

Oh, what beautiful pottery! I like them all, but mostly the ones with blue accents.

Your granny ... now I see where do you inherit the love for nature and hiking from!
She looks like a fantastic woman ... oh yes we miss them so much!

lol... Adrian.. :o That makes me laugh because "Granny" was not acceptable to Mary Barry... she insisted that I call her Grandmother. She was a member of the Natl. Audobon Society and a Docent at the Dallas Natural History Museum. I think this picture was taken in Alaska as she was an avid traveller later in her life. I even have a picture of her riding a Camel in Egypt in front of the Step Pyramid.... lol... yeah... I miss her.. ;)

She was right, "granny" was not enough for such a special person .
Well, Dan, what else can I say other than I wish you to be like your GRANDMOTHER when you will reach her age :)

As someone raised to know the difference between Oh wow and "you are doing a really good job, keep trying" from my mother those are Oh wows. As a example one of my earliest memories is being dragged through the Van Brickle (sp) (no I really mean dragged through it) in Colorado Springs when I just wanted to climb the mountains that were looming over me.

Throwing clay is a art form and not one easily learned. Most often one has a epiphany and then it is all down hill from there. You can be taught for years and not really get it (raises hand) then one day it all falls into place. She was a great artist and thank you for showing us.

Mark

BTW nice pig ;)

I see his blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of his eyes,
His body gleams amid eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.

I see his face in every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the birds
Are but his voice—and carven by his power
Rocks are his written words.
