This is Hogg mine rose quartz. I cut this for my daughter, not as nice as Gronkus's but but who's is. I used a homebuilt faceter with a home built lap with some information on what I was doing from Gronkus. Not too sure why it flashes blue like this sime times in the light but its pink most of the time.

Such a nice stone... looks like you did a great job on it... hard to believe you did this on a homebuilt faceter. That material is outstanding too... I think I may have some of the same stuff... Marci sent me some and I think it was from Hogg mine...

That is beautiful rose quartz. I have seen many nice quality rose quartz that have blue flashes. I have one I bought that is carved into a flower and it has blue flashes too. It is so unique. Great cutting. Can we see your home made lap? Jessica

Sure thing, its nothing too fancy. I made a little video a while ago for someone else and still have it. The set up cost about $35 to make as I got a used furnace motor for free. That doesn't include the laps which were $25 for each grit.

Love your setup. very functional and everything is right there, including the overflow bucket i'm jealous, i'm not good at engineering, so I had to buy mine for a lot more that you did. but mine is also a flat lap and i love it.

Wow that is so cool, thanks for showing us! I have wanted to start lapidary work and decided I would just do it by hand, but it is nice to see other options. Jessica

Great job on the rose quartz. I'm just cutting my first stone - actually glass marble (DollarTree-ite). I am intrigued by your homemade faceting machine. I noticed you don't have a mast or index gear. I am curious about how you do this.

I use this incredibly complex tool I built. It just sits on the wood box next to the disk. Thats my first cut sitting there its a yellow marble.

It lets me do some cutting. Nothing fancy, it could probably do shapes other than round but would be a huge pain to adjust so I pretty much just use it for rounds.

I am amazed, that's awesome! You cut a marble? LOL How cool is that!

I saw an apparatus similar to this at a rock show in Columbus. I didn't look close enough to try and decide if it was homemade, or commerical, but their was an elderly man using it to demonstrate with. He looked like he had been using it forever and quite content.
